Winter Rose<
by Patrica A. McKillip
Rois's mother died when Rois was very young, waiting for spring as some said. Since then her father has let her run wild in the wood. While Laurel, Rois's sister, is her father's practical daughter. Waiting to wed Perrin next spring.
Rois lives in a small medieval type village. The village like any other has it's share of legends. One in particular is of Lynn Hall. It tells of how Nial Lynn's, the cruel lord of Lynn Hall, wife died. How he beat his son, Tearle. How one night in a terrible snowstorm Tearle killed his father and vanished without a trace. And how with his last breath Nial cursed his son. Now the curses vary. As to what happened to Tearle no one knows.
Then Corbet Lynn, Tearle's son, rides into the village. He's come to reclaim Lynn Hall from the wood. Rois know something about Corbet that no one else does. She watched him step out of light deep in the wood.
With Corbet's appearance the stories begin to circulate again. Rois to drawn to these stories, the curses, and, both Laurel and Rois, to Corbet. Laurel to his charm and Rois to his mysterious past. As Corbet begins to rebuild the Hall, Rois begins to unravel the truth. What she find out about the Lynns, her mother, herself, and the wood is startling.
Patrica A. McKillip weaves a brilliant story. The plot thickens with every page. Things get kinda of complicated in the middle, but by the end everything makes sense. This is a great book. I couldn't put it down.
