OLINGER, HERMAN RADER [No date or paper indicated] At 3:30 o'clock this morning, Thursday, Nov. 15, 1945, Herman Rader Olinger, editor and manager of the Shenandoah Valley passed quietly away in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, where he was taken Tuesday morning for observation. His condition was known by close relatives and friends to be precarious, but few people of the community were prepared for his sudden demise. Mr. Olinger has been in ill health for a number of years, his condition becoming gradually and progressively worse as time passed, but he was able to be at his post of duty until three weeks ago, when he was confined to his home. Mr. Olinger was born at Quicksburg, Va., on June 28,1900, a son of Mrs. Effie PENCE Olinger and the late Clarence V. Olinger. He was thus aged 45 years, 4 months, and 22 days at the time of his demise. He was a grandson of the late Samuel Olinger, once famous barn builder of this section of the Valley. Following training in the public schools of Shenandoah County, Mr. Olinger took a business course at Strayer Business College, and also some work at the National Radio Institute, in Washington, D. C. From 1919 to 19227 he was a wireless operattor on the S. S. Jonancy, plying between New England ports and Norfolk, Va. On Aug. 8, 1925, Mr. Olinger married Edna Virginia Baker, daughter of the late L. Benton Baker, then co-publisher of the Valley. Mrs. Olinger survives together with a brother, Edmond Olinger of Alexandria, Va., and his mother, Mrs. R. E. Olinger, also of Alexandria, Va. Mr. Olinger's connection with the Valley dated back to early in Oct., 1927, when he jouneyed to Maumee, Ohio, to take a six week's course to learn machine composition "dress." Mr. Olinger quickly mastered the use of the type setting machine and gradually took over other duties of the office operation, the past ten years handling all the estimating of job costs, layout of advertising and job printing, and allied work. Several years ago he took over the management of the Valley, ably assisted by his wife as businessmanager, handling the duties but declining the title of editor. Mr. Olinger early in life became a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church, west of New Market, and later transferred his membership to Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Following the merger of Emmanuel and St. Matthew Churches, he served a number of years as secretary and treasurer of the congregation. He also took keen interest in the New Market Lodge No. 117, Knights of Pythias, and as one of its Past Chancellors, he served as a representative to the Grand Lodge of Virginia. Mr. Olinger took a notable interest in civic affairs and was elected on June 14, 1938 a memaber of the New Market Town Council, which office he has held since. For the past four years he has served efficiently as Treasurer of the Town of New Market, his demise causing a vacancy which will be difficult to fill. At the time of his death he was also treasurer of the New Market Fire Company, which post he filled acceptably for a number of years. As a member of the staff of the Shenandoah Valley, Mr. Olinger was a skillful and careful craftsman, a considerate fellow worker, and a dependable colleague. He was self-effacing and unassuming when others were crowding into the limelight, but on hand and willing to do his bit when there was a job to be done. Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Edna Frances Baker, with whom he and Mrs. Olinger have resided since 1927. His pastor, the Rev.
