    The Children of Michael Pence

    Shenandoah County, VA, and Adams County, OH

    8 MICHAEL PENCE appears to be the Michael Bentz, son of Michael Bentz, who was born or baptized on 12 Mar 1738, according to the records of Trinity Lutheran Church at New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; died 25 Dec 1799 in Adams County, Ohio, drowning while attempting to cross the Ohio River when his horses bolted from the ferry, with inventory of his estate being returned 17 Jan 1800 in Adams County; married Sybilla (Isabella, Ibby, Civie) Frye 29 Dec 1767 in Berks County, Pennsylvania (she is called the daughter of Henry Frye of Maidencreek Twp, Berks County; she remarried to John Davidson 6 Oct 1803 in Adams County and later sought and obtained separate maintenance); "Michael Bens" is called the son of Michael of Earl Town, Lancaster County, on the record of his marriage an his father may have been the Michael Bentz, age 27, who came on the ship Loyal Judith in 1732, but no evidence has been found to show that this is the case; Michael Bentz of Earl Town apparently is the one who married Anna Elizabeth Huber (Hoover) 10 May 1737 in Lancaster County; Michael (Jr.) moved to Shenandoah County, Virginia, in the 1770s and then about 1796 he moved with his family to Adams County, where he was among the earliest settlers.     82 PETER PENCE was likely the Peter Bens, son of Michael Bens, who was born/baptised 3 Oct 1770 at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, East Cocalico Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 25 Nov 1832 in Adams Co OH; married Susannah (Roush) Zerkle 31 Dec 1792 in Shenandoah Co VA (John Cook, above, signed bond; she was first married to John Zerkle 28 Nov 1788 Shenandoah Co (she was born 10 Jan 1770 in VA, died 19 May 1851 in OH, daughter of Philip Roush and Catherine Kelchner). Children (said to be 12; this list contains 14 names; may not be in correct order):

    83 JOHN PENCE was born in 1769 in Pennsylvania; died before 16 Apr 1853 (will recorded, but tombstone says 18 Apr 1853) in Adams County, Ohio; married Priscilla Tumbleson 6 Oct 1800 in Adams County. Children:

    831 THOMAS PENCE was born about 1798 (?) in Ohio; possibly he who married Betsey D. Brewer 1 Jun 1820 Adams County, Ohio; listed with wife Isabel in 1850 census. Children (all except first in 1850 census, probably other older children):

    8316 THOMAS PENCE was born - Oct 1841 in Adams County, Ohio (from 1900 census; age 32 in 1870 census of Winchester, Adams County; tombstone says born 1842); died 14 May 1908 in Montgomery County, Ohio, buried in Hardin's Creek Cemetery, at Bridges, Fairfield Twp, Highland County, Ohio; married Barbara Ann Bradney 11 Aug 1865 (she was born 11 May 1842 in Adams County, died 12 Aug 1928 in Montgomery County, buried Hardin Creek Cemetery [no stone], the daughter of Oliver Bradney and Rebecca Haney); Civil War veteran and pensioner, enlisted at age 21 on 22 Aug 1862 as a private, mustered into E Co. 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 15 Sep 1862, transferred out on 12 Aug 1863, and into Co. E, 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillerly, mustered out 20 Jun 1865 at Knoxville, Tennessee; they were in Wincester Twp, Adams County, in 1870, not found in 1880 and in Marshall Twp, Highland County in 1900 with granddaughter Josephine Shoemaker and son Oliver.     83165 (WILLIAM) ELBERT PENCE was born 6 Jun 1877 in Ohio; died 5 Sep 1943 in Clark County, Ohio; married Minnie Ethel Davis about 1908 in Clinton County, Ohio (she was born 12 May 1890, died 27 May 1967 in Fairborn, Green County, Ohio, remarried to Harry Lovelass before 1930); he registered for the World War I draft in Greene County (called Elbert and his birth year is given as 1875, not 1877); in Highland County, Ohio, in 1910 (he is called Albert, age 32) and 1920 (he is called Elbert); they were in Greene County at the 1930 census.     835 JOHN PENCE was born in 1810 in Ohio; died after 1860 (his son Henry's obituary said Henry was still in his teens when his father died - incorrect, as John was enumerated in the 1860 census - and said his father was "crippled"); married Matilda Elizabeth Henderson 4 Feb 1832 in Adams County, Ohio (her name is given as Elizabeth in the 1850 census and Matilda in the 1860 census; in 1876, his daughter, Minnie, brought suit against her siblings and mother, Matilda, seeking to have his land partitioned; the land was located in Adams County adjoining that of Elijah Pence, Jr. Children, from the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Sprigg Twp, Adams County, and the 1876 suit concerning his estate:
