    The Children of Jacob Pence

    Augusta/Rockingham County, VA

1 JACOB PENCE was born about 1710 probably in Germany; married Catherine _____ [also called Mary Catherine in some records] about 1737; died near Cub Run, Augusta (now Rockingham) Co VA before 27 Feb 1750/51 when his brother Valentine Pence gave bond as executor of his will, dated 20 Dec 1750. Will mentions his sons Jacob and George, each to have a third with their mother, unnamed, "when they come of age." Jacob, George, John and William Pence, and Christian Persinger (husband of Jacob's daughter Barbara), received settlement in 1768 from Peter Miller, who was executor of Valentine Pence's will. Jacob Pence's widow remarried to Jacob Persinger, date not known, and they went to Botetourt Co VA. Children:

Apparently this couple was separated by the time of the 1880 census. The daughters Lottie and Lavanna were found living in other households in 1880 and the sons David and Elmer and the parents could not be located in that census. Several records pertaining to the son David George Pence indicate he was born in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, but the familly could not be found there in the 1880 census, nor is there any indication they ever lived there. From The Barry Adage, Barry, Pike County, Illinois, Friday, 9 Jul 1880 (apparently reprinted from a Missouri newspaper): "There was a sad and pathetic scene on a Missouri Pacific train last Monday night. An old man named John Pence and wife, of Barry, Illinois had been to Kansas to visit a son and on their way home, after the train had past Warrensburg [Johnsonn County, Missouri], the old man was taken quite ill, and Col. Crittenden and a couple of other gentlemen on the train went to his assistance and did what they could for him, but they soon saw that death was nigh. When Col. Crittenden informed the aged wife that her husband would soon die, she knelt down in the car and offered an eloquent and pathetic prayer, during which time the chains of death prevailed and there were no dry eyes. The old man, who was 77 years of age, died in about a half hour, and the remains were taken off at Sedalia [Pettis County, Missouri], placed in a coffin and passed through here Tuesday, enroute to Barry."
