marrriages
William McDonald and Sarah Boyd were married in the State of Pennsylvania in Bedford County on the 15th day of January 1790; William's age not known, Sarah was 20- years of age the 13th of March following. The above records are of the father and mother of my grandmother and your great grandmother, Rachel (McDonald) Pence. // William McDonald died April 24th, 1815. Sarah (Boyd) McDonald died September 8th 1850 in the 83rd year of her age. // Rachel (McDonald) Pence was born March 28th, 1806 and was the 8th child and 4th daughter of a family of 9 children, 5 daughters and 4 sons, of the above parents. She died here in St. Paul, Indiana in this house, November 7th, 1883. Her husband, Lewis Pence, was born June 15th, 1803, presumably in Ohio as that is where they came from to Indiana. He died June 7th, 1858, here in St. Paul, Indiana. I think the cousin who visited here (Ruth Pence) lived in Springfield, Ohio, but notification of her death was received before Aunt Sarah Feaster died, and since then I have never heard any thing from there or them. // When I read your letter yesterday evening, I finally remembered that I had grandfather and grandmother Pence's family Bible and that she had the family Bible of her parents left her fom a sister who died in Henry county, Indiana, and I got a ladder and found them both in the top shelf of the living room ceiling high press and the dates and records herewith are the result of that search or recall of memory. Have written this with pencil so if I found any errors in checking, they would be more easily erased and corrected. Uncle Ed"
Notes by DTM: (1) This document was provided by Avery Guest, son of Alice. (2) Sarah Boyd had reached age 82 (in her 83rd year) when she died in 1850. This means she was born March 13, 1768, and would have been 22 at her marriage. (3) Lewis Pence was born in Rockingham Co., Virginia. (4) Rex Avery, nephew of Edker, lives in the home in the Shelby Co. part of St. Paul where the letter was written. (5) Sarah (Pence) Feaster, who died in St. Paul in 1908, was Edker's aunt and my great great grandmother.

Additional Information: The above records were hand copied 21 Jan 1982 by Doris Toon Alley from the family Bible in possession of Miss Nancy McFarland, 203 Church Street, Ladonia, Texas. Nancy and her brother Albert Sylvester "Vester" shared the family home at that time and each had health problems. Their paretns were Newton Jackson and Hazzie (Hulsey) McFarland. Their grandparents were Jackson and Artemissa (Pence) McFarland. Vester was b. 1900 and Nancy was b. 1902. After the death of Vester in 1983 Nancy went to the Grove Manor Nursing Home in Honey Grove, Texas. She is now deceased, 1990. Nancy gave me permission on one of my visits to copy some loose in her Bible which contained a short history of John Pence and Nancy Waggoner written by Lola McFarland, youngest dau of James Franklin and Mary Jane Harper McFarland. John Pence and Nancy Waggoner settled in Ky in the 1700s at the Land of the Sinking. Lived there until Artemissa was about 6 [1835] then moved to Green Co. IL near Leitchfield until she was 16. Lmoved to Fanin Co. TX in 1845. In 1846 Artie married. She was tall, thin and very courageous. She died in 1907. Polly Pence Griswold md. Ambrose Griswold. [***The last digit of the original entry for the year has been inked out now appears as 188[blot]. 1882 has been written directly above the previous entry]

[****The year is very difficult to read on the photocopy, but it appears to read 1884]

[The deaths appear to be written by multiple people. My best guess would be that the first two entries (Amos-Clarence) were by author #1, who was also the author for the birth records. I think a second author did the next three entries (Sarah-Edward). I think author #3 did the next set (Thomas H.-William Cody) although William Cody could belong to author #4. The entry for Nellie is by a new author, and the last entry for Henry is by still another author]

NOTES: Transcription and comments are by Nancy Beach, York County Historical, December, 1997. On Joseph's Bible the book is fragmented. There is no front piece. On the sheet introducing the New Testament, which follows the family record there is a sheet with a publisher and date. The family record and the New Testament are still bound together. It says: Philadelphia: William W. Harding: 1864 The marriages look like they were written by possibly three different people. The verbage on the second entry (Conaway's) is totally different from the other three. A guess, and just a guess, is that Joseph's entry was by person #1, Conaway's entry was by person #2, and Allen and George's entries were by person #3 but at different times. The births look like they were all written by the same person, except the entry for George P. Lucas. They appear to be written at the same time. The death records appear to be written at different times, and by different people. The first two entries, Samuel and Conaway, were probably written by the same person and possibly at the same time. The person who made those two entries is probably the one who did all the births (except George) and the marriage records for Allen and George. Joseph's entry is by a totally new person in a style new to this Bible. Sarah and George's death records were probably by the same person, but again a new person. The last entry was made by still another person.

NOTES: Transcription and comments are by Nancy Beach, York County Historical. December, 1997.

Conaway's Bible has loose covers. His name is written on the inside of the front cover, but no other annotations appear there.

The title page says: Philadelphia: Published by Jesper Harding,/No. 57 South Third Street/J. Harding, Printer, 1847

The name on the front cover is written in a different handwriting than the entries in the family record of the book.

The first page contains marriages and one column of births. This page appears to be written by the same person, and at the same time with two possible exceptions. The first exception is the entry for Conaway's second marriage. The second marriage record has a similar handwriting. But the ink is ever so slightly lighter in color, the wording varies in style, and there are minor variances in how the numbers and letters are formed which may indicate that it was written at a different time and possibly by a different person. The second exception is the last birth record on the page (Joseph-1849). It was written with slightly larger lettering and appears to be written at a different time. There are some minor handwritting variances, such as the the style of the number one in the years, but when that variance occurs there are other characters within the entry that match to previous entries ... leading one to believe that they were written by the same person who had minor variantions in style. The first birth record on this page has the word "Rector" written in the margin near Sarah's name. It is in pencil and this word was definately added later and by a different person.

The second page of records contains one column of births and the deaths. The births appear to be written individually at different times. The first three (twins and Thomas) look like they were written by the same person. The next two (Albert and stillborn) appear to be written by the same person, but in a different time than the previous ones. And, the last two (Effie and Ann) look like they were written by the same person, but someone different than the one who wrote the first five entries. The deaths appear to be written individually and at different times too. The first three entries (Elizabeth to Thomas) look as if they were written by the same person ... probably the same person who wrote the first three birth records on this page. The next two, Catharine and Eve, were written by the same person ... probably the same one who made the birth entries for Albert and the stillborn. The death records of Myrtilla and Conaway were written by the same person ... probably the same one who made the birth entries for Effie and Ann. The last entry, for Allen, is in a handwriting that doesn't appear anywhere else in the book.

The Bible of Joseph Michael Pence

Schuyler, Colfax, County, Nebraska

Notes by Richard A. Pence: This is an elaborate, large King James Version of the Bible. The family records are, as usually the case, included in a section between the Old and New Testaments. The fmily record sheets and others at the begining of the Bible have come loose from the binding. "Enter according to Act of Congress in the year 1895 by J. R. Jones in the Office of Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C."

The Bible was purchased at a yard sale in western Pennsylvania and later given to Robert Hinton of Pennsylvania. During a visit to Washington, D.C., he gave the Bible to Richard A. Pence, a collector of Pence genealogical records.

Notes by Richard A. Pence: Photocopy of the family Bible of Abraham and Sarah Dawes, published by N. & J. White, New York, 1833. This Bible owned by Helen Williams, 1122 West Main, OK, in October of 1997. It appears the entries in this Bible were made by a child or perhaps a grandchild, because the first entry is not for Abraham or Sarah. This copy was given the author by Darrel Dawes of Camino, Calif., in early November of 1997.

The Bible of Jacob Pence

Transcribed from a photocopy from Corinne Reilly, Columbus, Ohio, by Richard A. Pence

List of births:

Next page, last page before the New Testament title page]

On a page by itself:

On another page:

What looks like "Jacob Mar------"

Below which is written:

Book sold at sale at Adison August 2th, 1924."

On the page opposite of the above:

An undecipherable entry which appears to begin with the word "Jacob" and end with "---- 5, 1818." Under that is a line and below the line "Jacob -------" is written at least twice, along with several other undecipherable words.

Additional Notes by Richard A. Pence: The Bible is in the possession of Ms. Reilly, who purchased it at an antique store in Urbana, Ohio, in 1995. The page size of the Bible is about 4 inches by 6 inches. The entries were on blank pages prior to the New Testament. The Bible is printed in German and the following, from the New Testament Title page, is apparently the publisher and place and date:

Philabelphia:

Gebrudt ben O. und D. Billmener, 1815.

There is another page with writing on it. It is possible the first word on this page is also "Jacob" and it ends with "1819." The marriage bond for Jacob Pence and Christina Shepp in Rockingham County is dated 3 March 1819 and it appears that the various "scratchings" with the years 1818 and 1819 in them may be related to that.

The above is not all of what is written in the Bible, as some of it is illegible and it appears that some of this is merely "handwriting practice" for the person who made the entries.

Jacob Pence was likely born in York County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Pence (Johann Jacob Bentz) and wife Elizabeth (maiden name unkown). The senior Jacob migrated first to Rockingham County, Virginia, and then to Miami County, Ohio, and then settled in Warren County, Ohio. In the estate papers relating to the senior Jacob Pence in Warren County is a letter to Jacob's son John, who was adminitrator of his father's estate, from a Michael Bentz of York County (John's first Cousin) relating to the settlement of the estate of the senior Jacob's father, Johann Micahel Bentz (Michael Bentz) of York County.

The Bible of Daniel B. Pence

Transcribed by Brenda Brent Gordon November 17, 2000

The Family Bible of Daniel B. Pence, is now (2000) in the possession of Harriet Pence Gray of Centreville, Oh. The pages containing family information were torn from the Bible before it was thrown away in the 1950s. In addition to this transcription by Brenda Gordon, transcriptions and photocopies of the pages were sent to Richard A. Pence by Gary Brooks, Harriet Gray's brother-in-law, of Withamsville, Oh., in April of 1999.

Brenda's Note: The following has been typed as accurately as possible, but any words in italics or parentheses are notes which my Uncle Claude Jackson wrote on my copy for clarification or information which I personally know to be true.

The Family Record of Henry Pence

Note by Richard A. Pence: There are two old lists giving the births of the children of Henry Pence and Mary Blimly. The dates on both lists match quite accurately the dates of several of the children obtained from other sources.

The first list discovered was made early this century by Mary Catherine Pence, a granddaughter of Henry's son Benjamin, in Bartholomew Co., Ind. A copy of the list was placed in K. A. Pence's Judge John Pence in the Indiana State Library 15 Apr. 1933 by Charles Pence, a grandson of Henry's son Benjamin. Charles' son, Roger, sent a handwritten copy to the author in 1971 and in July of 1972 Roger accompanied the author to view the list, which had been copied into the back of an old ledger book by Mary C. Pence. Roger Pence wrote that it was copied from a record included in family papers given Mary C. by her grandfather. The ledger, which has the date 14 June 1910 along with Mary C. Pence's name and address at that time, was in the possession of her nephew, Frank (Benamin Franklin) Roupp, Rt. 2, Edinburg, German Twp., Bartholomew Co. At this writing (Nov. 1996), children of Frank Roupp seem not to know where the ledger might be.

Following the birth date of each child is inscribed a zodiac sign. The dates of birth do not correspond to the normal dates associated with these signs. It is believed that the signs are "moon signs" similiar to those still found on some calendars. The early German immigrants used these signs as a guide to when to plant certain crops. (Samples of these can be found in, for instance, The Farmers Almanac.) Comparision of the signs with the signs for the dates involved (calculated with a computer program) shows that at least 12 of them correlate to these signs. All of these children no doubt were born near the Little Hawksbill Creek just east of the present-day town of Stanley in Page Co., Va.; however, because of county boundary development, the first five were born in then-Frederick Co. and the rest in then-Shenandoah Co. Following is the family record sent to the author by Roger Pence, who copied it from his father's list. The author has verified it against the list Mary C. Pence placed in the ledger book.

Family Record of Henry Pence

This record was copied from the family record loaned to my father by Mary Catherine Pence, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Pence, son of Benjamin Pence, son of Henry Pence, whose German name was Heinrich Bentz. Henry Pence and Mary Flowers came from Germany to the United States about the year 1760 [incorrect as to Henry, but perhaps correct for Mary] and were married in Virginia.

Births of Children

  1. George Pence, born August 16 - 1766 Sign - Goat
  2. Jacob Pence, born September 15 - 1767 Sign - Crab
  3. Henry Pence, born September 4 - 1768 Sign - Twins
  4. Abram Pence, born September 7 - 1769 Sign - Fish
  5. Magdalene Pence, born January 31 - 1771 Sign - Lion
  6. Susannah Pence, born July 4 - 1772 Sign - Crab
  7. John Pence, born January 15 - 1774 Sign - Fish
  8. Barbara, born November 2 - 1775 Sign - Fish
  9. David Pence, born February 4 - 1777 Sign - Goat
  10. Joseph Pence, born September 26 - 1778 Sign - Fish
  11. Samuel Pence, born February 4 - 1780 Sign - Water-man
  12. Anna Pence, born October 10 - 1781 Sign - Goat
  13. Isaac Pence, born July 23 - 1784 Sign - Virgo
  14. Elizabeth Pence, born June 22 - 1786 Sign - Fish
  15. Benjamin Pence, born April 25 - 1787 Sign - Lion
  16. Mary Pence, born June 9 - 1789 Sign - Fish
  17. Reuben Pence, born June 28 - 1791 Sign - Ox

The second list of these children appeared in the Citizen, a newspapter in Champaign Co. in 1879, as follows:

PENCE (BENTZ)

TREMONT CITY, O., July 22, 1879 - MESSRS. EDITORS: You will confer a special favor upon not only the writer, but a very large circle of friends and relatives, by giving publicity to the following genealogical record of the Pence family. While on a visit to David Pence, of Madriver township, the writer obtained from Mr. Pence the family record; which was commenced 118 years ago. Henry Pence, the father, and Mary Blimly, the mother, emigrated from Germany in their youth. Henry Pence was born A. D. 1740, just 36 years prior to the Declaration of American Independence, and died A. D. 1826, being 86 years old at his death. Mary Pence died A. D. 1829 in her 80th year. Their family consisted of nineteen children, two of whom died in infancy, and whose names are not given. The other seventeen grew to man and womanhood, were all married, and together with their wives and husbands were at one time gathered around the family board during the lifetime of both parents. The record is in the German language, but was translated by the Rev. John Pence, as follows, giving their births in their respective order: George, August 16, 1766; Jacob, Sept. 15, 1767; Henry, Jan. 4, 1768; Abraham, Sept. 7, 1769; Magdalena, Jan. 3, 1771; Susannah, June 4, 1772; John, Jan. 15, 1774; Barbary, Nov. 2, 1775; David, Feb. 4, 1777; Joseph, Sept 26, 1778; Samuel, Feb. 4, 1780; Anna, Oct. 10, 1781; Isaac, July 21, 1784; Elizabeth, Feb. 22, 1786; Benjamin, April 25, 1787; Mary, June 9, 1789; Reuben, June 28, 1791. The original name was Bentz, but by reason of the German dialect the name stands as above. I will not trespass upon your indulgence by giving anything additional at present.

Yours truly, S. H. Wallace

[Believed to bs Squire Wallace, whose mother was a Pence]

S. H. Wallace is believed to be Squire H. Wallace, the son of Edward L. Wallace and Anna Pence, who was a granddaughter of Henry Pence through his son Jacob.

Note that there are five minor differences in the two lists, no doubt the result of copying errors in one or both lists:

  1. Henry, 4 Sep. 1768 in list 1; 4 Jan. 1768 in list 2 (exactly eight months).
  2. Magdalene, 31 Jan. 1771 in list 1; 3 Jan. 1771 in list 2 (28 days).
  3. Susannah, 4 July 1772 in list 1; 4 June 1772 in list 2 (exactly one month).
  4. Isaac, 23 July 1784 in list 1; 21 July 1784 in list 2 (two days).
  5. Elizabeth, 22 June 1786 in list 1; 22 Feb. 1786 (exactly four months).

David Pence, in whose possession the Ohio record was in 1879 was the son of Henry's son Abraham. It was doubtless David who provided the list of children (without birthdates) that appears in Beers' history of Champaign Co. The Rev. John Pence, who translated the Ohio list, was a long-time Lutheran minister in Clark Co., Oh., and was a great grandson of Valentine Pence of Augusta (now Rockingham) Co., Va., and unrelated to the Hawksbill Pences.

Everything is as it appears, even if it seems to be a mistake. I do not understand why under births, it appears that Alice's name is spelled Allic or Allie. This information was contained within three pages in the bible: Births, Marriages, and Memoranda. Some deaths were listed in the Memoranda section. The Memoranda section appear to be in different handwriting.]
