to a distant lover

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
If I had my wish, you'd be by my side.
Although I have traveled and journeyed long,
I want you to know that your smile is among
the most contemplated verses in my heart's antiphonic song.

If I could see you and be with you now,
that moment could erase a lifetime of sorrow.
If only I could hear you once again,
I would be able to withdraw from this pain.

Alas! Wishes are not horses!
Beggars do not ride!
Worst of all, I shall perish without you by my side.

For although where my heart is,
there too is my home...
...but living without you
is like being banished from Rome.
