Doctor Faustus Bad Angel Good Angel Mephostophilis Plato Chorus Lucifer Aristotle Job Faustus: Even though I have studied philosophy, jurisprudence and pharmacology, and with keen endeavor studied theology until becoming a Doctor of Divinity I have studied and tried all that I can But nothing I've done can make me more than a man. I've tried almost all, but one holds my fancy I shall engage in the art of necrocromancy! Bad Angel: Ah, Faustus, thou has spoken well. Good Angel: Refrain from it or thou wilt go to Hell. Bad Angel: Continue, Faustus, and thou shalt be able to forget about earthly strife. Good Angel: Only through Christ God gives eternal life. Remember that the wage of sin is death. Faustus: Ponder, Faustus, over this temptation--- Earthly delights or eternal salvation? Mephostophilis: Faustus, I can give thee wealth and treasures. Thou shalt be honored and enjoy earthly pleasures. I shall bring thee adventures manifold... Plato: Faustus! Justice is much more valuable than gold. (Republic 75) Chorus: Mephostophilis continues to cajole until Faustus with his own blood starts to inscroll and to Lucifer, Faustus yields his soul Before the deed could yet be sealed Faustus' blood strangely congealed! Plato: Thy blood has congealed, Faustus, because thou art going against thy nature. Justice is superior to injustice. Thou wilt be hurt by injustice because of the effects it will have upon thee. (Republic 114) Throw out the deed while thou hast time. Lucifer (in Hell chuckling to himself): Sign it Faustus, and thou shalt be mine. |
