Windshields & Fairings
A windshield or fairing is is a must for comfortable freeway
riding or touring on a Nighhtawk. The standard seating position puts
you "up tall", so anything that breaks that wind is a plus. Here are
some options:
- Hondaline - Yep, Honda makes a windshield for the
90's version Nighthawks (both 250 & 750). It is extremely easy
to put on, fairly rigid, and really stops the wind. It's made of
Lexan, and it is farly large, sticking up about 18" above the
headlight. Honda made them back in the 80's for the older
Nighthawks, but you'll only find them in Salvage yards, and then
only if you're lucky. Your best bet for one of the "classic"
Nighthawks is an aftermarket.
- Memphis Shades - Memphis Shades make a wide assortment
of windshields, tinted in different colors. They don't have a web
site -- but-- you can see photos of some of their products at
Motorcycle Accessory
Warehouse.
- National Cycle -
National has a Web
Page too They make many styles that are advertised as
"Available for most motorcycles", from small to large, costing as
low as 50 bucks. Some can be had tinted. I haven't personally
checked them out, but I'm sure some of you out there have. Let us
know!
- I was looking through the accessories portion of your
site and saw that you didn't have any personal testimonials for
National Cycle wind screens. Since I have one, I thought I'd
throw in my two cents. I have a "Deflector" model, which is
their smallest. It's about 15" tall, handlebar mounted and has
adjustments for both height and rake. I also have the Hondaline
wind screen, but I get too much wind buffeting across the
helmet. The National Cycle one is smaller and just enough to
keep the wind off of my chest at highway speeds. I've been up
to 100 mph on it and in cross winds, with no complaints. It was
$46.95 plus shipping through Motorcycle Accessories Warehouse.

- Targa - Targa
will ship your fairing "painted to match the bike" for $270. It's
smaller and more curved than the Hondaline and the Rifle's. They
also make a matching "lower fairing". Targa can be reached at :
Targa Sportbikes, 21 Journey, Aliso Viejo, California 92656.

- Vetter - I know this company was big a few years ago
(remember the Windjammers?), and some owners did put Vetter
fairings on 80's Nighthawks, but it was before my time (biking
time, that is). Vetter is no longer in business, BUT....... Rifle
Fairing was started by 5 ex-Vetter management employees. You may
be able to find some in salvage yards, or sold by individuals. You
just have to stay vigilent.
- Clearview Shields - Thanks to Craig N. in Kansas for this
info: I have found a perfect place to order windscreens for
the 84-86 Nighthawk 700S. They make windscreens that are perfect
replacements for the short stock screen for $75.00.
but
best of all, you can order them in different heights from stock to
9 inches over stock. This transforms the stock fairing into one
that is actually effective. *
I am 6'2" and bought the +9" windscreen and it works
great and only cost about $90.00, depending if you want clear or
varying degrees of dark tint. They are the only company that
specializes in making this kind of screen and the workmanship is
excellent, and the lexan that they use is even slightly thicker
and stronger than what Honda used. I think the company also makes
screens for many other bikes including other 'Hawks, and they are
quick to custom make your screen and get them out to the customer,
and they are friendly to work with. Contact them at: P.O. Box 747,
59113 Hwy. 285, Bailey, CO 80421 Phone: 1-800-798-6089 or
(303)838-0886
* Only the stock size is now in
production. The taller sizes had bad wind-flow characteristics.
and were discontinued (6-6-98)
- Others - I'm curious, has any one ever tried putting a
salvaged Silverwing fairing and luggage set on a Nighthawk?
Hmmmmm??? Always wanted a "Nightwing".
