Tank Bags
Some folks prefer a tank bag over a rear seat bag for
commuting. If you have a passenger, then it's your only choice. I
have a Wolfman Magnetic Tank Bag, and used it every day until I
started using the Rear Seat Bag instead. It's not that I don't like
the Tank Bag, but the Rear Seat Bag holds everything I need. The Tank
Bag doesn't. It's that simple. Besides, I never carry a passenger.
Here's some choices:
- Wolfman - This is a magnetic tank bag, and those big
round magnets hold on pretty good. I found that if I put the bag
up too far forwards, it would lift up a bit at highway speed, but
never enough to make me think it was going to blow off. When slid
back down more towards the rear of the gas tank, it stayed on
solid. This bag fits the Nightawk 750 well, and also comes with a
velcro attached clear map pouch (which leaked a little bit in a
driving rainstorm in Wyoming). It holds quite a bit (see my
Trip Report Equipment
Review). I paid $75.00 for it at the a Honda Dealer, so you
might be able to find it cheaper mail order some where. Or, you
can support your local dealer-- Your choice. I go both ways.
- Chase Harper Compac - Comes in three sizes; 750 (10" x
8" x 9"), 1150 (13.5" x 9" x 9"), and 1500 (13.5" x 9" x 12"). All
have a removable map pouch, and are clip mounted, not magnetic.
- Tour Master - Tour master tank bags come in three
sizes; TB12 (12" x 6" x 9-1/2"), TB18 (12" x 8-1/4" x 8-1/2"), and
TB24 (14" x 10" x 9-1/2"). All three models are strap and clip
mounted (although the TB12 can be had in a magnetic mount). Other
features are an internal support system, mesh pouches inside and
out, and a backpack strap.
- Eclipse - Eclipse makes a wide assortment of Tank bags.
The Standard is a 1200 cubic inch (20 liter) strap mounted bag
with a large main compartment and 3 outside pockets. Also includes
a map case and raincover. The contour is similar to the Standard,
but is magnetically mounted, and has one less pocket. The
Sportpack is even larger than either of the previously mentioned
bags, expands to suit your needs, and has a removable, reversible
map compartment. The Elite is a large, expandable Magnetic mount
Tank bag.
- Roadgear - Roadgear makes a couple of different
magnetic tank bags, in all black, red & black, or a grey &
black color scheme. Check out the other good stuff at the
Roadgear Web Site.
- Others - I've seen a strap on tank bag made with the
"Fox" logo on it. I don't know who makes it, or what it costs, but
it is large, non-expandable, and mounts with a strap and clip
system. There are probably other makes and models on the market.
I'm tired of doing research. If you see or use something that you
think is worth passing on to others, let me know about it, and
I'll put it here.
