Jacob Pence of Montgomery County,
VA, and Descendants of Hardin & Grayson Counties, KY, and Texas
Peter Pence of Page County, VA
Page County, VA
C1 PETER PENCE was born about 1795 (in 1840 he was older than 40, but not yet 50), probably in Pennsylvania, died about 1848, probably in Page County, Virginia; married Sophia Aleshire 8 Feb 1823 in Shenandoah County, Virginia (she was born - Oct 1800 in Virginia, died 30 Jan 1885 at Stoney Run in Page County, age 84 years and 3 months [death record; the published record says "Honey Run," but she lived at Stoney Run at the time]; a newspaper death notice says she died 29 Jan 1885 at Alma, Page County, age 84; her age is given as 45, 55, 64, 76 in the 1850-1880 U.S. census records, the daughter of Henry Aleshire [marriage record]). An 1885 atlas shows her living just east of Alma on the south side of Stoney Run in Shenandoah Ironworks District. In 1878 Sophia sought a pension based on her husband's service in a Pennsylvania or Maryland unit in the War of 1812. In her deposition, she stated that her husband came "here [Page County] after the war from Pennsylvania." However, those children who survived until the 1880 census gave their father's birthplace as Virginia. Sophia stated in her petition application that Peter died 31 Jan 1854, but he was not with the family in the 1850 census. Sophia's petition was denied because she could not provide any specifics about Peter's service. A biography of his son Abraham (Pense) in a family history says Abraham, who served in the Union Army from Iowa, had five brothers who served in the war (in the Confederate Army) and four died in battle; it appears that this is an accurate statement, except that the four who died were not all killed in battle, as their respective listings will show; The marriage and census records of Page County identifiy the following children for Peter and Sophia (Aleshire) Pence:
C11 HENRY PENCE was born in 1825 in Virginia; appears to have died in the Civil War, but no record found; married Susan R. Croft 3 May 1852 in Page County, Virginia (she was born - Jan 1832 in Virginia, daughter of Jacob Croft). As Susan A. Pence, she was living alone in Page County in 1900; she may have been the "Mrs. Pence" living across from Sophia near Stoney Run in Marksville District in an 1885 atlas.
C12 MARY (POLLY) PENCE was born in 1827 in Virginia; married Abraham Aleshire 21 May 1844 in Page County, Virginia (he was born in 1827 in Virginia, the son of Jacob Aleshire); they were in Page County in 1850.
C15 C13 ELIZABETH PENCE was born 26 Nov 1827 in Virginia; died 5 Feb 1891, buried in the Rinehart Family Cemetery at Battle Creek, Page County, Viriginia; married Andrew Jackson Rinehart 8 Nov 1849 in Page County (he was born 26 Nov 1827 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, died 8 Nov 1862, buried in the Rinehart Family Cemetery, the son of Adam Rinehart and Mary Price); not found in 1850 census, but they were in Page County in 1860.
C14 HARRISON PENCE was born in 1829 in Virginia; died of disease (diarrhea) 12 Aug 1864 during the Civil War while serving in the Confederate Army and a prisoner of war at Elmira, Chemung County, New York, buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Gravesite 44, Elmira; he enlisted 16 Apr 1862 at Rude's Hill, Virginia, as a private, mustered into F Co., 2nd Virginia Infantry; taken as a prisoner of war on 12 May 1863 at Spotsylvania Court House, Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and confined at Elmire on 2 Aug 1864.
C15 WILLIAM PENCE was born in 1830 in Page County, Virginia (possibly still part of Shenandoah at the time time); died 27 Feb 1863 at Richmond, Virginia (see below); married Rebecca Short 14 Feb 1856 in Page County (she was born in 1824 in Virginia, remarried to William Fleming 2 Aug 1866 in Page County). During the Civil War, William was among several soldiers in his unit who were charged with desertion and it was decided one of them would be executed as an example, the victim to be determined by lot; William drew the short straw and on 28 Feb 1863 he was shot by a firing squad at Camp Winder at Richmond, Virginia. William enlisted on 4 Apr 1862 as a private, giving his residence as Leakesville, Page County; that same day he was mustered into H Co., 33rd Virginia Infantry (called "the Page Grays"); he was listed as "Deserted" on 20 Apr 1862 at Elk Run, Virginia, only two weeks after his enlistment, and reported as "Returned" on 21 Dec 1862, place not stated. This is the only record of a child found:
C16 ABRAHAM PENSE was born 27 Nov 1832 (1834 in 1900 census of Keya Paha County, Nebraska; twin to No. C17) in Page County, Virginia; died 24 Nov 1912 in Keya Paha County, buried in Springview Cemetery, Keya Paha County; married Sarah Eliza Humphrey 15 Aug 1862 in Cedar County, Iowa (she was born 25 Feb 1846 at Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, died 1 Feb 1923 in Keya Paha County, buried in Springview Cemetery, the daughter of the Rev. Aaron Humphrey and Betsey Starr); he went to Cedar County in 1857; enlisted in the Union Army on 15 Aug 1862 as a private and on 29 Aug he was mustered into Co. B of the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry; he was transferred out on 20 Nov 1863 into the Veteran Reserve Corps and was discharged on 29 Jun 1865 at Davenport, Scott County, Iowa; they were in Story County, Iowa, in 1880 and moved to Keya Paha County in 884; the story is that his name was spelled Pense on his army record and that he then maintained that spelling for his family.
C17 CATHARINE PENCE was born 27 Nov 1832 in Page County, Virginia (twin); married John Nauman 22 Aug 1867 in Page County (he was born in 1815 in Page County, the son of David and Catherine Nauman). She was living in his household under the name Catherine Pence at Alma in Page County in 1860 with the child, Charles Pence, below. John Nuaman was appaently a widower with some 8 children. In 1870, the child Charles is shown as Charles Nauman, age 10; also in 1870 there are several older Nauman children and one named Mary J. Nauman, age 4, and an unnamed Nauman child, one month old. In 1880, the household consists of John Nawman, age 64, Catherine, age 47, Charles P, age 21, Mary S., age 14, and Ada Lee Nawman, age 10.
C18 ISAAC NEWTON PENCE was born in 1836 in Page County, Virginia; died 30 Jul 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, killed in Civil War at a battle at Ream's Station, buried "in a fence row at Alma" in Page County; married Harriet F. Short 17 Jun 1858 at her father's home in Page County (she was born in 1840 in Page County, died in 1923, buried in Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery, Stanley, Page County, daughter of Richard and Mary Short); she lived at Marksville in Page County.
C19 (JOHN) WESLEY PENCE was born in - May 1838 in Virginia; married Harriet A. Stephens about 1871, probably in Iowa (she was born - Sep 1848 in Pennsylvania); he was living alone in 1860 at Grove Hill, Page County, Virginia, he reportedly served in the Confederate Army (possibly one of the two John Pences who served in the 33rd Virginia Infantry) and following the Civil War he migrated to Iowa, then Nebraska, in the tracks of his older brother, Abraham; he was called Wesley Pence (age 38, born Virginia) and living with his brother Abraham Pence (age 34, born Virginia) and his family in Center Twp, Cedar County, Iowa, in 1870; he and Harriet were in Grant Twp, Lyon County, Iowa, in 1880 and in Boyd County, Nebraska, in 1900; he was called Wesley in the censuses of 1850, 1860 and 1870; in 1880 he was called John adn in 1900 and 1920 he was John W.
C1A (MARY) ANN PENCE was born in 1840 in Page County, Virginia (she was age 11 in1850 census, age 18 in 1860, 25 in 1870 and age 23 on marriage record); married Albert Doffelmoyer 8 Dec 1867 in Page County (he was born in 1844 in Page County, son of Jacob and Nancy Dofflemoyer); she was living in Page County with her mother in 1850 and in the home of Harrisson C. and Minerva J. Dovel at Leaksville in 1860; Albert and Mary Ann lived in Shenandoah, Page County, in 1870, where he was a teamster; Mary Ann was apparently dead by 4 Nov 1873, when Albert remarried to Adeline Douglas; the 1880 census shows only children of Albert and Adeline, so Mary Ann apparently had no children.
C1B CHRISTINA PENCE was born in 1842 in Virginia; married Joseph S. Nauman 25 Apr 1867 in Page County, Virginia; in the 1870 census of Page County; Joseph S. Nauman, age 25, is shown with wife Mary A., age 18, and William Pence, age 11, living with him; William is probably the oldest child of Isaac Newton Pence, killed a few years earlier in the Civil War.
C1C SUSANNAH PENCE was born in 1846 in Virginia; married Henry T. Pettit 21 Dec 1874 in Page County, Virginia (he was born in 1854, son of Elijah and Mary C. Pettit).
C1D HENRIETTA PENCE was born in 1847 in Virginia; she never married but had a son.
C1E (AMBROSE) MARTIN (A. M., MARTIN A.) PENCE was born 18 Sep 1848 in Virginia; died 5 Jul 1925, age 74 years, 9 months and 17 days, supposedly buried in Nauman Family Cemetery, Stanley, Page County, Virgina, although there is a stone for him in Leake's Chapel Cemetery at Stanley with the preceding date of death and age and which also says "erected by a daughter"; married (1) Virenda Love Nauman about 1882 in Maryland (she was born 5 Jan 1852, died 18 Mar 1902, buried in Nauman Cemetery); in Page County in 1900 with the children below and there in 1910 and 1920.
Hocking County, OH, Pence Families
According to a local history, John Pence settled in what is now Hocking County in 1798 with his brother-in-law Conrad Brian. Where they came from is not known, except that the history says "western Virginia."
There is a tradition among the descendants of one of John's children that the immigrant ancestor of John was a Christian Frederick Pence who had a son Valentine. This Valentine supposedly married a Francisco and they were the parents of the John Pence who went to Hocking Co. A Christian Friedrich Panse arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship Peggy 24 Sep 1753. These descendants believe that John Pence came from Virginia, while others say it may have been Pennsylvania.
The information relating to Christian Frederick Pence and a son named Valentine was handed down to the descendants of John's son Peter, apparently by someone who had no knowledge of the fact that Valentine and Jacob Pence bought land in Augusta County, VA, from the Francsicos and also probably knew them in Lancaster County, PA. An Isreal Francois is listed as being in Hocking County by 1800, and a Frederick Pence, possibly John's brother, is listed in the 1800 census of the county.
The tradition is intriguing, but there seems to be a strong possibility that some years back someone did just enough research on the family name to learn about Christian Frederick Pence's arrival and the fact that a Valentine Pence bought land in Virginia from the Franciscos and put this information together to reach some incorrect conclusions. Making the story at least somewhat doubtful is the fact that no records can be found which tend to support it. On the other hand, if it were true, it would seem to tie the Augusta County Pences - the brothers Jacob and Valentine - somehow to the Hocking County Pences, perhaps through a connection in Lancaster County.
Jacob and George, the two older sons of Jacob Pence of Augusta Co, had sons named John born about the same time as John Pence of Hocking County and very little is known about either of them; it is possible one is the John Pence of Hocking County, but again there are no hard facts to support this. And no Frederick Pence is associated with these famllies.
One correspondent says Pences also came to Hocking County from West Virginia. This could be the same family as John and Frederick, for West Virginia was "western Virginia" until the Civil War. A John Pence married Phoebe Brummage in Monongahala County, VA (now WV) on 9 Oct 1797, and, according to Brummage descendants, both Pences and Brummages went to what is now Hocking County. John Pence of Hocking County did have a wife named Phoebe, but it has been assumed her last name was Brian, since John Pence and Conrad Brian are called brothers-in-law in Hocking County histories. John Pence did not have to marry a sister of Conrad Brian in order to be his brother-in-law; Brian could have married Pence's sister, or they could have married sisters. Also, the term "in-law" did not have as precise a definition as today's. For example, two men whose children married were sometimes referred to as brothers-in-law.
Hocking County, OH
D1 JOHN PENCE was born about 1772 in VA or PA; died age 68 in 1840 in Hocking Co OH (his will was written 13 May 1840, filed 21 Sep 1840); it was possibly he who married Phoebe Brummage 9 Oct 1797 in Monongahala Co WV (then VA), although it has been assumed he married Phoebe Brian, as he is called the brother-in-law to Conrad Brian in a Hocking Co history (Phoebe died 20 Dec 1846, age 75; Phoebe Brammage was born in 1779, the daugher of John Hannah Brummage). The will of John Pence of Falls twp., Hocking Co was dated 13 May 1840 and recorded 21 Sep 1840. His wife, not named, is to have the farm and reside on (E half of the SW 1/4 of Section 12, Twp 14, Range 17, 78 acres). Sons: William, Peter and Gashon Pence are mentioned. as are daughters: heirs of daughter Polly Eldredge, heirs of daughter Hannah Smith, Rebecca Pence, Eliza Tennerhill, Sarah Powell and Jane Pence. Executor: son, William Pence. Signed: John (his mark) Pence. Witnesses: John Rochester, Meed Bowen and John A. Smith [this abstract provided by a correspondent]. Children, said to be 12, probably not in birth order (all but the first were supposedly born in what is now Hocking Co:
D11 HANNAH PENCE was born before 1798; married Henry Smith 7 Mar 1820 in Hocking Co, called Hannah Smith in father's will written in 1840 (a
Hannah also married Ephriam Grimes 8 Feb 1829 in Hocking Co).
D12 REBECCA PENCE was born in 1799 in OH, called the first white child born in what is now Hocking Co OH; she died 25 May 1886 in Hocking Co, age given as 94, but she was age 80 in the 1880 U.S. census; umnarried. Funeral card found in Shelby Co OH: Miss Rebecca Pence. Died Tuesday, May 25 1886. The First white child born in Hocking Co. Funeral, Thursday at 2 o'clock p.m. from residence on North Walnut Street [in Logan, Hocking Co OH].
D13 JOHN PENCE died in late Aug or early Sep 1822 in Hocking Co (verbal will given 29th "last month," depositions given 4 Sep 1822, recording date not given, witnesses Walter Eldridge and George Clark; married Catherine (Kitty) Keasy 28 Jun 1821 in Hocking Co; she probably was the Caty Pence who married Joseph Blane 29 Apr 1823 in Hocking Co.

D18 JANE PENCE was born in 1815 in OH; died 10 Jul 1881 in Hocking Co OH, buried Old Logan Cemetery, Hocking Co; probably unmarried as her father's will and cemetery record gives her name as Pence, although a
Hocking Co history says she married Amos Ward; she and her sister
Rebecca were living in Logan, Hocking Co in 1880, with a nephew William
Pence (born 1845 in OH) and niece Hattie M. (born 1876 in OH).
D19 PETER PENCE was born 15 Jul 1817 in OH; died 18 Dec 1898 in Wells Co IN; married Sarah Jane Sloan 7 Jun 1838 in Hocking Co (she was

D1C _____ PENCE.
Hocking County, OH
D2 FREDERICK PENCE, possibly a brother to John (U1), was in what is now Hocking Co OH in 1800, according to a county history; he perhaps is the Frederick Pence who married Mary Harp (Hart?) 1 Jun 1804 in Fairfield Co OH; John and Frederick Pence paid taxes in Berne Twp, Fairfield Co in 1806, and a Jacob Pence was a taxpayer in Greenfield Twp, Fairfield County in 1806. Hocking Co was formed in 1818, partly from Fairfield County. Possible children include:
D21 JOHN PENCE was born in 1809 in Ohio; married Mary Hart 25 Jun 1839 in Fairfield County, Ohio (note possible name of father's wife); in Hocking County, Ohio, in 1880.
D22 GEORGE PENCE was born about 1810 in Logan, Hocking Co OH (per death certificate of a daughter, but Hocking Co was not formed until
1818); it appears that he married twice: (1) Mary Jane Morgan about 1833 and
possibly he was the Washington Pence who married (2?) Leah Teets 7 Sep 1845 in Hocking Co. George was not with his first family in the 1840 or 1850
census, but a child was born in 1845; Mary Jane (she was born about 1810 in
OH) was the head of household in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Hocking
Co; she moved to Scotland Coimtu. Missouri, with her children in 1856.
D23 PETER PENCE was born ub 1815 in OH; married Sally Ann Hart 12 Nov 1835.
D24 MARTIN PENCE married Sina Little 28 Feb 1837 in Hocking Co OH; he was in Hocking Co in 1840 with 1 male under 5. In Hocking Co on 24 Apr 1851: "At my instance, an attachment was this day issued by Samuel Stultz, a justice of the peace of Washington Twsp., Hocking Co OH, against the
property and effects of Martin Pence, an absconding debtor. Dated this 12th
day of April A.D. 1851. Thomas Lytle."
Hocking County, OH
(Frederick1 Pence)
D21 JOHN PENCE was born in 1809 in Ohio; married Mary Hart 25 Jun 1839 in Fairfield County, Ohio; in Hocking County in 1880 with grandchildren Della Cowden, age 3, and John W. Bates, born in 1879. Children include:
D211 IRA PENCE was born - Oct 1840 in Ohio; there is a marriage record for Ira to Ellyn Jayne in Hocking County, Ohio, with no date on the record; however, the death of Ira Pence, single, son of John and Mary, on 9 Oct 1862 is recorded in Vinton County, Ohio, age 22 years, 11 months and 14 (24?) days, thus he is no doubt the Ira Pence who enlisted as a private 15 Aug 1861 in Co. I, 2nd Ohio Infantry and was killed 9 Oct 1862 at Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia.
D212 MARY MARGARET PENCE was born in 1842 in Ohio; married James W. Ramey 1 Mar 1866 in Hocking County, Ohio.
D213 JESSE PENCE was born 24 Mar 1842 in Hocking County, Ohio; died 4 Apr 1915; married Louisa Davis 27 Jul 1865 in Hocking County (she was born in 1840 in Ohio); lived in Salt Creek Twp, Hocking County in 1880, Jesse E., called grandson, born 1876, probably the same as the one later called Elmer and shown below as son (Jesse) Elmer; New Holland, Perry Twp, Pickaway County, Ohio, in 1900 with son (Jesse) Elmer and in Pickaway County in 1910.
D214 JOSIAH (JOSEPH) PENCE was born - Jun 1845 in Ohio; married Sarah Jane Lockwood 27 Feb 1867 in Hocking County, Ohio (she was born 29 Jan 1850 in Hocking County, died 6 Jan 1926, she remarried to Francis M. Ward 31 Mar 1921 in Pickaway County, Ohio; in Benton Twp, Hocking County in 1870 and 1880 and in Circleville, Pickaway County, in 1900.
D215 CAROLINE PENCE was born - Apr 1850 in Ohio (three months old in 1850 census, taken 25 Sep, but age supposed to be as of June 1).
D216 ELLEN PENCE was born in 1860 in Ohio.
ANDREW PENCE settled in what today is Wolfe County, Kentucky, about 1823. The village of Pence, located about nine miles southeast of Campton, is named after him. It is said that Andrew came to Kentucky from Illinois and his ancestors came from Virginia or possibly North Carolina. The Illinois speculation, however, is unlikely, as there was little settlement there in the years prior to the time Andrew is known to be in Kentucky. Additionally, the census records consistently show him to have been born in Kentucky. The notion - found both in print and on line - that he was the son of Henry Pence (Jr.) of the "Hawksbill Pences" who settled on the creek of that name in what is today Page County, Virginia, is definitely not true. This Henry Pence moved to Champaign County, Ohio, about 1805 and died there in the 1830s leaving a will naming his children and there is no Andrew among them.

Absolom Pence and his brother Abraham were the first white settlers in the
Mountaintown district of Gilmer County, Georgia, apparently having gone to Georgia by 1822, for all of Absolom's children were said to have been born there. Absolom, Abraham, John and Elizabeth (probably their mother) were all in Habersham County, Georgia, in 1830. In 1840, all except John were in Gilmer County. Note that Cherokee County was formed partly from Habersham County in 1831 and the next year Gilmer County was formed from Cherokee County, indicating these families may not have moved after 1830 - the county lines did. Abraham Pence, the father of Abraham, Absolom and John, died in Haywood Co, NC, late in 1827. He probably is the same person as the Abraham Pence, born between 1765 and 1784, who was in the Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1810 (now Pickens County, South Carolina). One correspondent says Abraham (Jr.) was born in South Carolina and married in North Carolina. Abraham (Sr.) was issued a deed in Buncombe Co, NC, in 1815, indicating his move to North Carolina by then. There is also supposedly a land record for Absolom in Buncombe County. This family was particularly hard hit as a result of the Civil War. Fourteen of the grandsons of Abraham (Sr.) fought in the Confederate Army and at least five of them were killed in action or died of disease (no record on one other).
Pendleton District, SC, and Haywood County, NC
I1 ABRAHAM PENCE was born about 1770 probably in SC; died 1827 (will dates) Haywood Co NC; married (1) Elizabeth, whose surname was probably Rice, about 1790 (Abraham deeded land in Buncombe Co to Elizabeth Rice in 1818 and it is believed by Rice researchers that this is Abraham's first wife and the deed was a settlement following a divorce; Elizabeht Pence, no doubt the first wife, was in Habersham Co GA, living near her son John in 1830, and in Gilmer Co GA in 1840, near her sons Absolom and Abraham; she possibly was the daughter of Moses Rice); (2) Frances (Frankey) Davis 21 Sep 1824 in Haywood Co (she was born about 1804 in Wilkes Co NC, the daughter of William Davis); he apparently is the Abraham Pence, born between 1765 and 1784, who was in the Pendleton District of SC in 1810 (now Pickens Co); in his will, dated 6 Oct 1827 and filed Dec 1827 in Haywood Co, he names the following: Anna Nice, Cassay Patterson, Abraham Pence, Absolom Pence, John Pence, Melinda Pence, Susie Elvira Pence, Elizabeth Rice, Caroline Pence, Cinthia Pence and his wife Frankey Pence.
