The audience sees three thick hard-covered books which are offered to three spectators who decide among themselves which of them will use each book. One of the spectators is elected by the group to select the chapter that will be used by the group. Each spectator turns to that chapter in his own book and copies the words of a sentence from the selected chapter onto a piece of paper. After slamming their books closed onto the papers, the papers are pulled from the books, torn and burned. Finally, the performer, who could have been out of the room during all this, turns to each individual or his spouse and divines the exact words of each sentence.
Each of the books has a substantial number of pages and chapters all of which are completely different. The performer is not told which chapter the group has selected. Each book is ordinary and different as are each of the sentences. No questions are asked. The performer neither touches nor approaches any of the props or spectators. No stooges or audience plants are required. No electronic viewing or listening devices are employed. No difficult memorization is necessary.
