![]() Diane (Nordgren) Skoss writes, "November 13 (1998) marks the first anniversary of my return to the States, after more than ten years in Tokyo, Japan. My husband, Meik (pronounced Mike, despite the way it is spelled), and I have decided to stay in BH, and we are now living in a tiny dilapidated old house on an acre of woods off Mountain Ave., just two blocks from the house I grew up in on Martin's Lane. We plan on rebuilding, in such a way as to preserve the trees, and hope to be living in a real house by the year 2000. Adjusting to life here has been a little more strenuous than we expected, though it is a continual joy to be able to sit at my computer (my business now has its own room--in Tokyo the computer was in the kitchen!), and look out the window at the leaves falling (and in spring the birds raising their birdlets). I've quite surprisingly gotten heavily into gardening--not the large scale landscaping sort, but a gentle taming of the woods (and constant battle with the deer and other critters). I don't try to grow things that require a lot of attention, so I've got lots of wildflowers and herbs scattered about in the rock walls the meander around our lot. We've started teaching our exotic martial arts in a VFW hall in Wayne, and Meik travels in to NYC weekly to do some "sword stuff" there. We hope to find a space locally that we can use as a combined book warehouse, private training facility (and a place to stow our gear while the new house is being constructed). Then we'll really move into gear. My company's second publication is now at the printer in Michigan, and I should have copies by the end of the month or so. It's called "Sword & Spirit: Classical Warrior Traditions of Japan, volume 2." Running a small company single-handedly is a challenge--one I don't always enjoy because of the incredible amounts of time and energy required, but I'm working on balancing it better (New Year's Resolution number one!). I've started driving again (had a Japanese license, converted from my American one, but did not drive while there--the streets are narrow, and crowded), and am going to buy a car. I feel like a grown-up--I'm actually going to purchase a brand new car! That about covers it for now." |
