Registry
It's a little embarrassing to request gifts from our friends and family--after all, our first date was on Buy Nothing Day, November 26, 1999. Mostly, we would love for you to show up and share our day with us. Still, gifts will be given, and I suppose we should make clear that we are not Crystal Punch Bowl People, or at least that we don't need more than one Crystal Punch Bowl. So we're registering for stuff.
Oh, and keep in mind, that some of our favorite gifts have been paintings, drawings, photographs, and pottery that friends have made (like the picture of my sister leaping 20 feet in the air). So, if you are an artist, an artisan, or just a regular guy who makes incredibly large televisions in his spare time, we certainly would prefer examples of your work to a store-bought gift.
Here are the places where we have registered:
and also
(But these last two places don't allow you to access their gift registries on-line. How old fashioned is that? They probably don't even take those new-fangled plastic "credit cards." Perhaps they will accept barter.)
We would also like to give you the option to make a contribution in our names to an organization that reflects our principles and values. In any case, it gives us a chance to "plug" them.
(By the way, here's something I learned when volunteering at a public radio station: it's often more valuable for them to have one more name than fifty more dollars. Why? Because the world of non-profits is full of matching grants, and because when they go to Congress [or the Ford Foundation, or local sponsors] to ask for money, they don't show your Congressman a redundant e-mail petition [please don't ever send that to me again], they show them a list of names of contributors. So $5 to your public radio station, for example, means a lot more than that--it's really One More Contributor, with a bonus of $5.)
We've each chosen one charity:
Julie chose Doctors for Global Health, a totally volunteer supported organization that sends relief efforts all over the world. She worked with this group in El Salvador and says that it's the best international physician's organization that she has worked with (not that the Red Cross is anything to sneeze at).

Jack chose the Frank A. Crosson Scholarship at the Boston Latin School, the oldest high school in America. He wanted to choose a group that promoted education and all the schools he went to are either publicly funded or well-endowed ("Hell-o, Mr. Harvard!"). The Crosson Scholarship was created by friends of Frank Crosson and honors his memory.

Boo chose the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She's selfish that way. The MSPCA veterinary hospital happens to be less than two miles from where we live.
