The Hootenanny

On Friday, August 17, we're going to have a campfire singalong that I like to refer to as "The Hootenanny."

I would like to post a few song lyrics and chords on this site so that we can all learn words and chords and even figure out licks and then sing together around the fire. Html is not the best way to print things out, so I recommend cutting and pasting this stuff to a word processor and printing that way.

Don't play an instrument? So what? Use a drum, sing the bass line, clap your hands. I should point out that the Hootenanny is not entertainment--it's recreation. In other words, no listening unless you join in!

Send me your suggestions of songs to sing. If they are easy to play and are not depressing break-up songs, they will receive more consideration.

My current picks:

My Girl
Lola, The Kinks
Proud Mary, CCR
Can't Always Get What You Want, Rolling Stones
Like a Hurricane, Neil Young
Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Queen (Liz's pick)
Gilligan's Island Theme (Pauline's)
Honky Tonk Women (For Julie's cowbell)
Venus, Bananarama (you know, the cover--who did the original?)
Passionate Kisses, Lucinda Williams (you may know Mary Chapin Carpenter's version)
Can't help falling in love, Elvis
If I had $1,000,000, Barenaked Ladies
I Saw Her Standing There, The Beatles
Feel Like Making Love, Bad Company
Satellite of Love, Lou Reed

Yoda
----
parody of "Lola" by the Kinks
Lyrics by "Weird Al" Yankovic

I met him in a swamp down in Dagoba
Where it bubbles all the time like a giant carbonated soda
S-O-D-A, soda
I saw the little runt sitting there on a log
I asked him his name, and in a raspy voice he said, "Yoda"
Y-O-D-A, Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

Well, I've been around, but I ain't never seen
A guy who looks like a muppet, but he's wrinkled and green
Oh, my Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

Well, I'm not dumb, but I can't understand
How he can lift me in the air just by raising his hand
Oh, my Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

Well, I left home just a week before
And I've never ever been a Jedi before
But Obi Wan, he set me straight, of course
He said, "Go to Yoda and he'll show you the Force!"

Well I'm not the kind that would argue with Ben
So it looks like I'm gonna start all over again
With my Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

So I used the Force
I picked up a box
I lifted some rocks
While I stood on my head
Well, I won't forget what Yoda said

He said, "Luke, stay away from the darker side,
And if you start to go astray, let the Force be your guide."
Oh, my Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
"I know Darth Vader's really got you annoyed,
But remember if you kill him then you'll be unemployed."
Oh, my Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess
So I'm gonna have to leave Yoda, I guess
But I know that I'll be coming back some day
I'll be playing this part till I'm old and gray
The long-term contract that I had to sign
Says I'll be making these movies till the end of time
With my Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda
Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda

69 Love Songs
69 Love Songs has a great song called The Book of Love, that I'd love to have at the ceremony. I don't know what Julie thinks.
