I'm not sure if my maternal grandparents had English names. They were born of an age such that my grandmother's feet were bound when she was a child, but my grandfather, a forward thinking independent young man, had the binding removed when they married. They had seven children:
- 1st Uncle (living in Beijing)
- 2nd Uncle (deceased)
- 3rd Uncle (deceased)
- 4th Uncle (living in Taipei)
- John (5th Uncle)
- Yinhsin
- Yvonne (Jack's mother)
Uncle John married Chan Lee and has one son:
Yinhsin married Chungwu Ho and they have two children:
- Minnie (married Rohit, son Anand)
- Ronald (married Christina)
Yvonne married D.Y. Cheng and has three children:
- Pauline (have you seen that link to the side?)
- Vera
- Jack (hey--that's me!)
Introduce yourself to these people, they're nice. Some notes that may be useful:
- A lot of the Chinese families call each other by their familial associations. Thus, Vera and Pauline call Jack "D," which is the phonetic pronunciation of the Chinese word for "little brother." This can be confusing because I call Vera "younger [of my] older sister[s] ('xiao jie jie')" and Pauline calls her "younger sister ('mei')" and aunts and uncles call her "fat" ('pong,' a childhood nickname) but just go with the flow, try to guess who we're talking about through context and use the English names.
- Joe Rocchio (Mary Crosson's husband) has four daughters from his previous marriage: Catherine, Rose, Eileen and Sheila.
- There are three women named "Yvonne Cheng." My mother and two aunts on my father's side. This may seem very confusing, but they don't get confused because they (and others) call each other by their Chinese names, or by their relation names ("2nd Sister-in-law").
- I haven't listed much of my mother's side of the family, only the ones that live in North America. The more (geographically) distant cousins won't be coming to the wedding, and I'm afraid I don't remember their English names.
- There may be a quiz or contest related to this information; start memorizing now.
- Frank and Mary Crosson had a son and daughter-in-law named Frank and Mary Crosson. Mary Crosson (Julie's mom) married Joe Rocchio, whose first wife was also named Mary.
- It's probably not good (or accurate) to call Vera "fat" unless you speak Chinese.
