Dar Williams is Cool

Review coming later. Dar Williams, End of the Summer, Razor & Tie RT2830-2

I just got the new Dar Williams cd.The first thing that stands out is the one cover song - The Kinks Better Days. It stands out because of the catchy melody, and also it seems to me that excellent female singers do wonderful work with Kinks songs. I just love Kirsty MacColl's version of Days. (Actually, in re-reading this, maybe Dar was trying to top Kristy with a better Days song).

My initial reaction to this cd is that while it sounds great, possibly the songs may not be on a par with her previous work. I say that for two reasons- I heard her once say on an interview that it takes her as long as a year to complete a song. She works long and hard on its composition, and the results showed on her previous work. She has spent much of the last few years since her last cd on the road, gathering an enthusiastic and large following. So I think that her record company may have pushed her to get out new product while she's 'hot.' This is a complete supposition on my part, and I am probably completely wrong. I've got to listen to this about 20 more times and then I'll pitch in with a review.

Let me also say that she is a wonderful performer, artist and in interviews seems like a charming person. All the things that make me a fan. (7/25/97)
